Trump shows Kim a video laying out the stakes of summit

Jun 23, 2018

SINGAPORE — President Donald Trump, the former reality television star with a knack for theatrics, tried a dose of Hollywood drama as he sought to sway North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during their historic summit. Using an iPad, Trump said, he showed Kim a short video made on his behalf, laying out the opportunities that could come with an agreement to eliminate North Korea's nuclear arsenal — a story about "two men, two leaders, one destiny." Reminiscent of a movie trailer, the film shows images of warplanes and artillery while a narrator suggests in English and Korean that "a...

White House restricts US press access to Kim Jong Un summit

Jun 23, 2018

SINGAPORE — The White House restricted journalists' access to parts of President Donald Trump's summit with Kim Jong Un on Tuesday despite long-standing arrangements intended to ensure the public is kept fully abreast of key presidential moments, such as the first meeting in history with a North Korean leader. Under standard rules agreed to by the White House and the press corps, a full pool of reporters travels with the president at all times and is allowed at any meetings where press access in granted, even if space is limited. The group includes representatives from various forms of media —...

Trump and Kim shake hands in scene complex as their rivalry

Jun 23, 2018

SINGAPORE — Donald Trump approached from the right, striding down the long portico at the colonial-era Singapore resort. Kim Jong Un, dressed in his familiar Mao suit, emerged from the left. They met in the middle, on a red carpet, dozens of cameras recording their every move as the world watched. And counted. Thirteen seconds. That's how long the American and North Korean leaders shook hands at the start of their summit Tuesday. The length of the contact, their facial expressions and body language, the stunning backdrop of interlocked national flags — all of it was instantly analyzed, criticized and...

'I'm so happy': Dennis Rodman weeps as Trump and Kim meet

Jun 23, 2018

SINGAPORE — Former NBA star Dennis Rodman openly wept on television in a live interview from Singapore on Tuesday as President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un met for the first time. He told The Associated Press that he hopes to soon visit the White House. The eccentric former reality television star is one of the few Westerners to have spent time with Kim during multiple visits to Pyongyang. The two struck up an unlikely friendship over their shared love of basketball. Rodman also goes back years with Trump and appeared on his "Celebrity Apprentice" show. In an...

Singapore Postcard: Summit adds value to North Korea's coins

Jun 23, 2018

SINGAPORE — Stamped with images of "Eternal President" Kim Il Sung, national monuments or even ballistic missiles, coins minted in North Korea are renowned among collectors for their scarcity, partly due to international sanctions that outlaw them from being auctioned. Now collectors in Singapore who have spent tens of thousands of dollars acquiring the coins are happy that Tuesday's summit is driving up prices and ushering first-time buyers into the market. Joseph Poh, who has been buying and selling North Korean coins for two years, made his largest sale after the confirmation of a summit between North Korean leader Kim...
